  • 1 medium Red Onion Add sweetness and depth to the dish.
  • 1 large Eating Apple Opt for a crisp variety like Honeycrisp.

For the Braising Mixture

  • 1/4 cup Dairy-Free Block Margarine Substitute with olive oil or vegan butter if preferred.
  • 2 cups Apple Cider The star ingredient that infuses tanginess.
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon Warm spice that elevates flavor.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg Adds aromatic notes that harmonize with the cabbage.
  • 2 tablespoons Dark Brown Sugar Provides sweetness and caramel undertones; maple syrup is a substitute.
  • 2 tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar Contributes a tangy kick.
  • 1/2 cup Water Ensures proper cooking of the cabbage.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by removing the outer leaves of the red cabbage, then halve it and discard the core. Finely slice the cabbage and add it to your slow cooker for that vibrant base!
  • Peel and finely slice the red onion. This will add a wonderful sweetness to your dish, so don’t rush! Toss it into the slow cooker alongside the cabbage.
  • Peel, core, and chop the eating apple into small chunks. This adds a delightful hint of sweetness. Incorporate the apple pieces into the cabbage mixture in your slow cooker.
  • Add the dairy-free margarine, apple cider, cinnamon, nutmeg, dark brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, and water into the slow cooker. Season with salt and pepper, then mix everything until well combined.
  • Set your slow cooker to high for 4-5 hours or medium for 5-6 hours. Cook until the cabbage is tender and fragrant. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed before serving.
  • Optional: Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley for a pop of color and flavor!
