Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for dredging)
  • 2 cups vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mash chickpeas until mostly smooth but still slightly textured.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat; sauté onion and garlic until golden brown.
  3. Combine the sautéed mixture with mashed chickpeas, breadcrumbs, cumin, and paprika in the bowl; mix well.
  4. Shape the mixture into patties using wet hands to prevent sticking.
  5. Lightly coat each patty in flour.
  6. Heat oil in a deep pan until shimmering at about 350°F (175°C). Fry patties for about three minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels before serving.
